Kelly Young - 1998

17 year old Kelly Young became upset after af telephone conversation with her grand mother. We don't know what led to her becoming upset, but we do know that the staff did choose to confront her instead of leading the other residents away until she would have calmed down.

The confrontation resulted in her death.

Afterwards a lot of regulations were put in place. However the numbers don't lie. There have been deaths as result of the use of restraints since.

There is no information concerning the reason for the placement of Kelly Young in such a facility. Would there have been options which could have kept her home and receive treatment from home?

The answers seem to remain unanswered.

May she rest in peace.

  1. Kelly and I were friends. We went to the same high school and "dated" when we were younger. We were very close up until she started to break down and was sent off to brisbane.
There was a lot of issues in her past, particularly with her brother. In her last days at school, she would leave randomly and walk the perimeter of the building over and over again.
Her parents were stubborn and ill equipped to deal with her problems, which rose more and more with their lack of care. They tried a few places and ultimately put her in brisbane,

When she was in the hospital, on that awful day, the reason she became agitated was because she had her period and the staff refused to get her any sanitary napkins. She started to freak and they restrained her using a box hold. (arms are crossed at the neck and held behind the back) The rest is history.

There was a lot of mystery surrounding it. No one at school told us, we had to read it in the papers. And we weren't allowed at her funeral, even her close friends. In fact, it took me five years to track down where she was buried. It was a horrible time and nothing was ever done about it.

    1. I love the fact that so many of your assertions are completely baseless and incorrect.

What high school did you go to that Kelly also went to where she would randomly walk around the perimeter? You dated her and yet you labeled her parents as stubborn?

Did you really try to go to the funeral? I remember an outpouring of friends, but... A box hold, huh?

Nice to see someone has (or had) all the answers that others have been searching for.

    2. Not sure how I stumbled on this comment several years later but here we are..
Feel free to email me to verify any and all information.

Kelly and I both went to Montgomery academy. She was no longer in public school in the years leading up to her death.

This was a school for troubled children and it was not uncommon for kids to be allowed to wander the grounds if they needed some time to cool off.. I recall Kelly doing this very often. And I do have several teachers and students I'm still in touch with who will back this up.

In addition, because the school I went to was a private/alternative school, we were not informed of her death and funeral until well after. In fact I'm pretty sure my mother read it to me from an obituary?

Furthermore if you read the case study of Brisbane which is out there and very disturbing, the box hold is mentioned many times.

Also notice the quotation marks around "dating" there was a few years between us and I was 13 or 14 and it was a sort of joke that we were dating. I even bought her earrings which unfortunately she was allergic to.

Not sure how any of that was unclear, but if you really want to challenge me in knowing her, I'm happy to talk to you privately. David

Unfortunately it's been some time and I can't find the official Brisbane report. However this article as well as a few others mention both the basket and box holds.

There was an entire investigation including testimony into this situation and many details came to light including why she was agitated and what resulted in her death.

  3. I happened to stumble across this article. It is so eerily similar to a well known investigation done in the 1970's by Geraldo Rivera about the horrors of Willowbrook, NY Institution for mentally ill children. For a moment I thought this was the same place. If you can handle it, then take 15 minutes of your time to watch this report. It will scare the crap out of you...
